You might be interested to know that Springfords sponsor the Lothian branch of Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) and Carol Wright, our Business Group partner spends time helping, on a voluntary basis, on the Board.
So what does YES do? Well, the YES program encourages students (‘achievers’) aged 16 to 18 to set up and run their own company over the course of one academic year – quite a challenge! Achievers have to elect a board of directors, raise share capital and market and finance a product or service of their own choice and in doing so develop entrepreneurial skills and get invaluable practical experience about how to run a business. At the end of the year they liquidate the company and present a report and final set of accounts. Achievers are then encouraged to present their business idea at an annual awards evening. Carol says “Some of the business ideas which came forward from the 34 teams taking part this year were amazing – plus the calibre of some of the presentations was excellent - it really gives me a lot of confidence in the future for Scotland!”
This year the winners in Lothian were students from Linlithgow Academy who set up a business called “Perfetto” - a coffee shop in the school selling big-brand hot and cold beverages and snacks. Apparently the business is so successful that there is an intention for the next sixth year coming through to continue running the enterprise in the next academic session!
YES relies on volunteer business advisors who help students and link teachers through the process of setting up and running the company plus sponsorship. So if you are interested in volunteering some of your time to work with young people who will be the entrepreneurs of the future or if you would like to sponsor YES then please get in touch with Carol Wright on firstname.lastname@example.org
