Once again Springfords staff have taken up the challenge taking part in two very different endurance events:
LDWA 100 Mile Walk
You will have read in previous Newsletters about Jennifer Smith and Sue Bird from our Business Group who have completed the Caledonian Challenge several times (to walk 54 miles in 24 hours along part of the West Highland Way). This year the girls wanted to "up the ante" and find an event which would push them harder and further (and also give their friends and colleagues a fundraising break) - they found The Long Distance Walkers Association's (LDWA) annual 100 mile walk! This walk is held every year in late May - up to 500 people gather to walk 100 miles in 48 hours. Depending on the weather and conditions, around 70% of entrants complete the walk, walking through one, possibly two nights, aided by checkpoints dispensing food and drink (but no beds!).
This year the walk started in Wadebridge in Cornwall and finished in Teignmouth, Devon - 100 miles with over 13,000 feet of ascent - so after a huge amount of training Sue and Jennifer headed south. Thankfully the weather was on their side with the sun shining throughout the day and a full moon to guide them through the night. The pair set off at 9.30 am on Saturday morning but after 57 miles (an achievement in itself) an injury picked up by Sue during training meant she was unable to continue.
Undaunted by this set back, Jennifer continued on alone and with the help of other walkers, checkpoint staff and husband Graham (who met her at each checkpoint), completed the gruelling 100 miles at 9.41 pm on the Sunday evening - a time of 36 hours and 11 minutes - an amazing achievement. Jennifer is pictured here, having walked 65 miles and looking remarkably fresh!
"Never again" said Jennifer - but just a few days later she has started contemplating doing it all again next year - and of course Sue will be back to try again next year.

Kirsty Ashworth, one of our Auditors, has been a regular swimmer for several years and decided late last year she needed some sort of motivational goal to work towards - she found the 2013 Swimathon which gave her the opportunity to take up a challenge and raise money for charity - Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Kirsty trained twice a week to meet her 1.5 km target - arriving in the office exhausted after an early morning training session (the bacon rolls weren't such a good idea though).
As part of Kirsty's fund raising efforts she dressed up as a daffodil and went round the office shaking her bucket - giving everyone a bit of a fright and a laugh - see Kirsty pictured here with her medal.
The 2013 Swimathon took place on Sunday 28 April and Kirsty completed her challenge of 1.5km in 45 mins 33 sec - well under her target time of 1 hour.
With the help of colleagues, friends and family Kirsty raised over £260 for Marie Curie Cancer Care - "Definitely worth the effort of all those early morning swims".
