Old Bags, Changing Young Lives

09 June 2014

As many of you will be aware, Fiona Donaldson, our  Private Client Tax Partner, is Chair of the Lunch with an Old Bag committee, and Springfords are very proud to be sponsoring this unique event for a second year.
LWOB is a fabulously glamorous lunch in aid of The Prince’s Trust Scotland, held annually in September, and generously hosted by James Thomson in the splendour of Prestonfield House in Edinburgh. It is now The Prince’s Trust’s biggest fundraising event outside London.
The lunch was launched in 2009  with the aim of challenging negative stereotypes. In a youth obsessed society, women over 40 are often mistakenly perceived as “Old Bags”, as “over the hill” or “past it”, in much the same way as disadvantaged young people are often wrongly labelled as layabouts and losers. To highlight the latter, LWOB celebrates the glamour and grace of women who aren’t afraid of birthdays, and aims to shine a light on the issues faced by young people in Scotland today. It brings together over 400 of Scotland’s most glamorous and stylish ladies, known affectionately as ‘Old Bags’, (now a badge of pride!) for what has become one of the most sparkling and glittering events in Scotland’s social calendar.
Every £1,000 raised at LWOB allows The Prince’s Trust to effectively transform a young life, by helping young people get into education, get a job or start a business. To date, the generosity of all involved has allowed LWOB to raise £1.13m for the Trust, which translates to fresh starts for 1,131 young people. With that momentum behind them, the committee hope to make LWOB 2014 yet more glamorous, more exciting and more fun, all with the aim of raising yet more funds to transform (and in some cases, effectively save) young lives.
Last year’s lunch alone raised £450K, which is a tough act to follow! Fiona and the LWOB committee are therefore scouring the country for the fabulous auction prizes which will help them raise the funds much needed to turn around the lives of more young people in Scotland.
