Even as a young boy, Craig McBirnie, son of Susan McBirnie from our Business Group, was always to be found digging in the garden, picking up leaves and planting. So, when the opportunity came at the age of 16 for Craig to leave school, he jumped at the chance and the only job he wanted was to be a gardener.
His Guidance Teacher at Ross High in Tranent arranged a meeting with a member from "TOiL" (Training Opportunities In Lothians) and Craig was given an 18 week work placement with the landscaping and grounds maintenance contractor, Greenfingers in Leadburn. The TOil Programme enables contractors to take on young recruits at no obligation for 18 weeks. The trainee is reviewed each month to check on progress and receives in-house training and career guidance.
Craig thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and on 2nd November 2015 was awarded his Apprenticeship Attainment Certificate at the City Chambers in Edinburgh (see picture).
Having completed his placement, Craig's hard work was rewarded and he is now employed with Greenfingers. Even on these cold wet mornings, he is up and out the door at 6.45am ready to tackle the varied challenges of winter gardening, which he loves.
