Jane Carmichael, our Office Manager, was delighted to receive a commendation for services to local sport from Midlothian Council at a ceremony on Friday 27 October. The award was presented by Adam Montgomery, Provost of Midlothian, and Alison Walker, freelance sports journalist and TV presenter.
Jane has been involved in playing and developing hockey in Midlothian for well over 40 years. Having started her playing career at Lasswade High School, she played for the school in the morning and then played for a Musselburgh based senior team in the afternoon. After leaving school, she joined the newly formed Eskvale Hockey Club, which was based in Bonnyrigg, and the rest is history.
With the shortage of astro turf pitches in Midlothian, the Club had to move to Dalkeith Campus for some years but was delighted when a new hockey-friendly astro turf pitch was built last year at Lasswade High, meaning a welcome return to Bonnyrigg, their ancestral home.
The Club now also boasts a men's team, which Jane helped establish some 10 years ago, to accommodate boys who had come through the youth set-up but had to leave Midlothian to find a senior team.
Although Jane hung up her boots a few seasons ago, she still has very close links with the Club, especially in youth development, organising Community Clubs in the Midlothian area in conjunction with Midlothian Council and Active Schools, and running U12 and U14 squads. Umpiring duties also take up quite a bit of her time.
Obviously Jane loves the sport and wants kids to experience what she has enjoyed over the past 40 plus years in the sport, where she has made many enduring friendships. As she puts it "I've had a ball".
